Navigating Safe Lodging as an LGBTQIA+ Traveler: Your Complete Guide

Traveling should be all about discovering new places, having fun, and finding peace. But for LGBTQIA+ travelers, it can sometimes feel like navigating a minefield. In today's complex world, finding a safe and welcoming place to crash isn't a luxury - it's a matter of life and death.

A recent incident at the Daddyland Festival in Dallas, Texas, underscores this need. Hundreds of attendees at this LGBTQIA+ event were harassed and ejected from the Crowne Plaza Hotel by hotel staff, despite having booked the space specifically for the festival.

Openly gay men were targeted and removed for wearing scanty clothing in a private event space, while women wearing revealing bikinis at the hotel's public pool were left unbothered. This double standard highlights the ongoing discrimination that LGBTQIA+ individuals face when traveling.

As one attendee put it, "The patriarchy has no problem with girls in skimpy bathing suits, but when it's MEN doing it (gay men especially) then it's a huge problem.”

The hotel's actions were widely condemned, and this incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of finding genuinely welcoming places to lay your head.

At Be The Transformational Change, we believe everyone, no matter who they love or how they identify, deserves safety and peace. This guide is designed to help American travelers be smart, stay safe, and support our community along the way.

Know What You’re Looking For: Red Flags? RUN

When scouting for LGBTQIA+ friendly accommodations, the signs of a welcoming spot are usually loud and proud. Look for places that display pride flags, use inclusive language, or explicitly state their support for the LGBTQIA+ community in their company rhetoric. Friendly staff and visible signs of support are green flags.

But, if you spot any of these red flags, it’s time to hightail it out of there:

  • Hostile or dismissive language about LGBTQIA+ issues

  • Negative reviews from other LGBTQIA+ travelers

  • No clear policies on inclusivity and non-discrimination

Tips for Safe Travel

Safety first! Here are some tips to keep your travels worry-free:

1. Lock Your Doors and Bring Your Own Protection

  • Make sure your accommodation is secure. Use additional locks if needed and bring items like a portable door lock or a rubber doorstop for added safety.

  • Carry personal protection items that make you feel safe, such as pepper spray, a whistle, or a personal alarm.

2. Stay Aware of Your Surroundings

  • Be mindful of your environment at all times. Familiarize yourself with the neighborhood, including the nearest exits and emergency services.

  • Avoid sharing your exact location or accommodation details on social media. Share updates with trusted friends or family privately.

3. Keep Personal Info Close

  • Be cautious about sharing personal details until you are certain you’re in a safe and welcoming environment. This includes information about your identity, travel plans, and where you are staying.

  • Protect your personal information by using an alias or providing minimal personal details when checking in if you ever feel uncomfortable.

4. Trust Your Instincts

  • If you ever feel uncomfortable or unsafe, trust your gut and remove yourself from the situation immediately. It's better to be safe than sorry.

  •  Don’t hesitate to change your plans or accommodations if you sense something is off. Your safety and peace of mind are paramount.

5. Communicate Your Plans

  • Always let someone you trust know your travel itinerary and check in with them regularly.

  • Use apps like “Find My Friends” that share your real-time location with trusted friends or family members so they can keep an eye on your whereabouts and make sure you’re safe.

6. Choose Accommodations Wisely

  • Opt for accommodations that have a solid reputation for being LGBTQIA+ friendly. Check reviews specifically from LGBTQIA+ travelers to gauge their experiences.

  • Consider staying at LGBTQIA+ owned and operated businesses, which are more likely to provide a welcoming and safe environment.

7. Emergency Preparedness

  • Know the local emergency numbers for police, medical services, and any LGBTQIA+ support organizations.

  •  Carry a small first aid kit with you and know basic first aid procedures.

8. Blend In When Necessary

  • Depending on your travel destination, it might be safer to blend in with the local customs and dress codes. Research cultural norms and adjust accordingly to avoid drawing unwanted attention.

Traveling as an LGBTQIA+ person shouldn't be a game of chance. By staying informed, aware of your surroundings, and prepared, you can enjoy a vacation that’s as fabulous as you are!
